Disaster Preparedness Checklist for Families

2026-04-19

Every family should have a disaster preparedness plan and kit ready before an emergency strikes. Start with the basics: a 3-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day) and non-perishable food, plus a manual can opener. Your first aid kit should include bandages, antiseptic, pain relievers, and a 7-day supply of prescription medications. Keep copies of important documents in a waterproof bag: IDs, insurance policies, bank records, and medical information.

. For tools and safety, pack a flashlight with extra batteries, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, a multi-tool, whistle, and fire extinguisher. Shelter supplies include emergency blankets, a tent or tarp, warm clothes, and sleeping bags. Communication is critical: ensure every family member has a charged phone, portable battery pack, and a written list of emergency contacts.
